New Spoken Label Session - Rich Davenport

Latest Spoken Label (Author / Artist / Spoken Word Podcast) features our returning friend Rich Davenport talking about his latest book "Horsetrousers".

Rich Davenport is a comedy poet, stand-up comedian and musician from exotic Bolton, in the UK. Inspired by Spike Milligan, Ogden Nash, Billy Connolly, John Cooper-Clarke, Robin Williams, Benjamin Zephanaiah, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry, and by his friend and fellow Boltonian, the late Hovis Presley, Rich has gigged all over the UK, spreading mirth and making loud noises. No, he’s never heard of him either. Rich was described in one review as a “no-nonsense Northerner,” which is ridiculous, because nonsense is his business, and business is good. Rich was first encouraged to compile a book of his poems of extreme gormlessness by Hovis Presley. After accidentally winning a couple of poetry slams, other encouraging individuals said the same thing. And now, finally, Rich's first book, GORMLESS is available now from Chinbeard books at the link below with fabulous illustrations from the marvellous Minty B. A percentage from every book will be donated to the ME Association.
Horsetrousers is his second book.

Book Review: To Drown as a Cure for Thirst: Poems by Blake Auden

As featured on Reading in Bed Episode 58B (Book Review Podcast)

Blurb: The fifth collection from poet Blake Auden, To Drown as a Cure for Thirst, is a delicate exploration of grief and how it affects—and is affected by—time and memory.

Written in the wake of a global pandemic, the book touches on themes including loss, healing, personal reflection, mental health, and love, even in the face of the things that haunt us. Auden's most personal and deeply honest collection to date, these pages examine the idea that we can overcome what winter has taken, and that to hurt is simply an act of remembering.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Reviewing Poetry books I frequently find a very different beast to reviewing novels like I do more than anything else really with Reading in Bed and poetry books themselves I have found certainly since the birth of Instagram with writers like “Rupi Kaur” and a number of other similar poets and this is certainly reflected in this book.

Wrote over the global panemic, my wife Amanda and myself brought out our joint short poetry book ‘The Lockdown was all we could see’ and reading this book made me think of very similar emotions we both went through when reading this book which is a book where the writer went through a massive case of reflection.

The starting piece is a great way of starting off this book with a element of looking backwards with ‘Tell me something good’ for example a incredibally stark reflection back before lockdown stating at the end of the piece “tell me the light / is simply our shadow, leaving / that the glinting steel is not a blade’ bringing a lot of memories back of when I was barely able to leave my home for the better part off 6 months.

A Loop which follows with a harrowing line ‘suppose tomorrow is just yesterday / moving’ before then replacing memories with nothing but darkness – making me think of a state of mind whether things were bright or not weather wise – everything was in a completely different state off mind.

Of course with the book being that weighty even though the poems are very sparse, it is not a book you can skip through, I suspect it’s a book that could take some readers months and months to get through because of the sheer weight of the words and considering the world is now hopefully over Covid, it does ask the question why wasn’t this book bought out before to be honest and whether people will want to return to emotions like what the writer was going through here like we all were.

It’s a great book however and I like the fact that the emotion is showed throughout rather than smacked you in the face.

8/10

New Spoken Label Session - Annie O'Neill Stein

Today's Spoken Label Podcast (Author / Artist / Spoken Word Podcast) features extracts from the debut novel by the late Annie O'Neill Stein.

I was contacted to feature Annie for October's 2022 Spoken Label back at the end of August 2022 regarding her debut novel 'Exit Wounds'.

Sadly, Annie sadly passed away before I was able to speak to her and so instead as a tribute to this talented writer are several extracts off her novel by Susan Blakely in tribute to Annie.

Exit Wounds is the story off Laura "Born to shanty Irish on one side and Park Avenue privilege on the other, Laura navigates a turbulent childhood filled with the alcohol-fueled abuse of her volatile father and her mother's excessive drinking. As the middle child of three girls, she assigns herself the role of her mother's protector, who dies when Laura is thirteen, leaving her heartbroken and adrift.

Insecure, anxious, and fearful, she tries drugs, random sex, and a sequence of lovers. Along the way she becomes a successful painter and has a bad first marriage. Nothing however seems to assuage her emptiness and her sense of loss. Eventually, she marries a caring man and has a loving daughter. It is only at the end of her life and by way of an unusual and unexpected turn of events that she is finally able to make peace with herself, to let go of the feeling that she never really grieved, and said goodbye to her beloved mother, and to appreciate that though we work at love and acceptance, sometimes the most wonderful experiences in our lives come in unanticipated and unsought ways.

Annie O'Neill Stein has an engaging voice- quirky, funny, full of original observations and expressions, as she adroitly explores the mysteries of the human heart."

Native New Yorker Annie O’Neill Stein moved to Los Angeles in the early eighties as an actress. After many small parts in TV series, from Miami Vice to Charlie’s Angels, she decided to follow her true passion, writing.

Being accepted to Sewanee Writers Conference to study with Alice McDermott planted the seed for Exit Wounds, her first novel.

Annie has written for several magazines, More, Los Angeles Times Magazine, Distinction, Folks and was a regular contributor to The Huffington Post for several years."

Because I tend to read fiction cinematically, I saw each chapter of Exit Wounds as fully realized scenes in a movie.
It isn’t a happy book and it’s not a sad book. It’s a brave, raw story of redemption infused with clever and witty black Irish humor.
-- Moritz Borman, Producer Snowden, Terminator Salvation, Basic, Savages

It manages to be harrowing and hopeful in equal measure. The scenes of a childhood defined by a brutal drunk beating a young girl's dying mother are as scarifying as any coming of age novel I’ve read, and the scenes of a life lived in defiance of the script she was handed is no less than thrilling.
-- Tom Lutz, Distinguished Professor and Chair of Creative Writing, UC Riverside/Founding Editor in Chief and Publisher of the Los Angeles Review of Books

Exit Wounds, Annie O’Neill Stein’s debut novel will draw you in, tug at your heart, and help you appreciate the subtle pleasure of black irish humor.
She hooks you in with her original voice and takes you on a journey without sugar coating or apology and helps one understand the importance of an examined life.
-- Bob Wallace, Former Managing Editor, Rolling Stone

Annie O’Neill Stein’s novel Exit Wounds is a striking debut. Her writing is sensory, emotionally honest, and darkly comic. Like Laura, her main character, Stein is a rule breaker. She takes the reader on a wild and satisfying ride.
-- Jan Cherubin, author of Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2020, The Orphan's Daughter

Exit Wounds is a remarkable first novel, distinguished by its shrewd attention to tactile detail, to the sights, sounds, smells and feelings experienced by its moving central character, all recounted in engaging herky-jerky prose, which constitutes a style in itself. Exit Wounds is a wonderful contemporary example of the examined life.
-- Nicholas Meyer, award-winning author, screenwriter and director

Generous and vulnerable, funny and wise, Annie Stein’s Exit Wounds fill with the kind of living detail that can crack us up one moment and break our hears the next. Exquisite in its portraiture of a troubled family, Exit Wounds feels as vital and natural as breathing.
-- Matthew Specktor, author, That Summertime Sound and American Dream Machine

* Special Announcement from Spoken Label *

Coming on Mon 28 November 2022 from 8pm to 9.30pm, Spoken Label (My Spoken Word Podcast series) has announced to host live on facebook (with a repeat to follow on all of the usual social media networks) the online launch of the second poetry book by the excellent Richard Harries.

Richard Harries (not to be confused with the Bishop of Oxford) is a well known spoken word artist with a considerable following on YouTube. He performs mainly in the North of England but he concentrates on East Yorkshire and Hull and the surrounding area. One of his first poems, Pirate Izzy, was written for his Granddaughter; and thereafter he began writing and performing at Folk Clubs and Pubs.

In addition to several years at the Hull Freedom Festival he has been a popular feature at the Filey Folk Festival, Cottingham Springboard, and in venues in Leeds, Harrogate, York and Wakefield. Richard's historical poems have been published in American Journals and his war poems were read in Ypres 100 years after the first shot in the Battle of Bellewaarde in World War I.

Richard is often known as the Bard of Withernsea or the Activist Poet of Hull having written for the Action for Hull Group, The Wilberforce Society and supported campaigns to save the Lord line building and Beverlygate and has contributed to the Saboteur nominated play HAUNT.

A collection of Richard's You Tube videos can be found in the 1create website. (https://1create.co.uk/richard-harries/)

Richard's second book is called "ICONIC TATTOO" and will be available in November 2022 and is described as "Iconic Tattoo follows Richard Harries wildly successful Awakening with yet another beautiful, funny and sad volume where he visits a childhood friend, and ponders what humanity has done to our natural world."

This special event will be hosted by Andy N (with assistance from Rose Drew from Stairwell Books) and features in support a short set from Andy N himself and Amanda Nicholson (Amanda Nicholson is an author, poet, podcast co-host and copywriter. She has written several books as Amanda Steel, including Ghost of Me. Amanda’s poetry has been broadcast on BBC Radio Manchester. She Has a Creative Writing MA, and has had articles published by Jericho Writers, Writers Weekly, and Authors Publish.) and also after Richard's set, a opportunity to ask Richard questions will also be featured.

The event shall start at 8pm on Zoom and is free admission and can be ordered via Andy N directly on email on aen1mpo@yahoo.co.uk. Please ensure the email has a subject matter off "Richard Harries Zoom Launch" to prevent it being missed.

Book Review: Morwenna Blackwood - The (D)Evolution of us

Blurb:

the water was red and translucent, like when you rinse a paint brush in a jam jar. The deeper into the water, the darker the red got. No, the thicker it got. It wasn’t water, it was human. It was Cath. Cath is dead, but how and why isn’t clear-cut to her best friend, Kayleigh. As Kayleigh searches for answers, she is drawn deeper into Cath’s hidden world. The (D)Evolution of Us questions where a story really begins, and whether the world in our heads is more real than reality.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

As you may have guessed from the blurb above, this a thriller and is a book within a book and is a tight, well paced thriller told from three different viewpoints from two different timezones.

Without giving too much this is a book that without doubt touches on some pretty full on issues – domestic violence  and abuse of the worst kind and crippling mental illness all present throughout the book and although powerful didn’t make life easy for itself in places.

Although I didn’t quite click with the three main characters, the pacing throughout the book was good and it carried it along quite effectively despite I had a few misgiving about all of the characters.

I particularly liked the use of Cathy with her segments being referred to as Cathy’s Diary which gave it a bit of a icy distance which I think worked really well.

Weaknesses, Although I thought the journey of the book worked really well from A to B to C and I feel it was good rather than great if that makes sense, there was a reference to one of the characters suffering a topic right at the end off the book that was responsible for their problems which I won’t go into too much which jarred somewhat as there was no real build up to it and to be honest underpinned the book somewhat and cost it two marks in my final review.

Bonus Episode - Spoken Label: Skylar J Wynter recorded live in Double Indemnity, Stockport (October 2022)

Bonus Episode today from recent Spoken Label (Spoken Word Podcast) guest Skylar J Wynter recorded live in Double Indemnity, Stockport - a monthly night ran by the wonderful Randy Horton and Sarah McConnell in October 2022.

Skylar J Wynter is the best-selling Author of poetry and flash fiction collection, Pieces of Humanity released on October 10th, 2020 to align with National Mental Health month. After an incident which changed the course of her life in 2014, Wynter turned to various art forms to process the trauma and make sense of her new self. She shares her poetry in the hopes it will help others find peace within their own realities and encourage humanity to reach out to each other with decency.Skylar resides in the Perth Hills of Western Australia, where she pens her creations overlooking national parkland and when she is not writing, she likes to create beautiful things with her limited jewellery making and sculpting skills, and serene spaces in her garden. She loves a great book, a sunny day and witnessing humans behaving decently. She hates cooking, and injustice, hopes Covid-19 disappears and online poetry events don't, and that someone

finds a way to make celery taste like cheesecake.
