Book Review: Bill Clinton / James Patterson - The President's Daughter

As featured on Book Review Podcast 'Reading in Bed Episode 58A'

Blurb:

A former president's daughter is kidnapped in this masterful rocket-ride of a thriller--the new blockbuster by President Bill Clinton and James Patterson,"the dream team" (Lee Child).

Every detail is accurate--because one of the authors is President Bill Clinton. The drama and action never stop--because the other author is James Patterson. Matthew Keating, a one-time Navy SEAL--and a past president--has always defended his family as staunchly as he has his country. Now those defenses are under attack. A madman abducts Keating's teenage daughter, Melanie--turning every parent's deepest fear into a matter of national security. As the world watches in real time, Keating embarks on a one-man special-ops mission that tests his strengths: as a leader, a warrior, and a father. The authors' first collaboration, The President Is Missing, a #1 New York Times bestseller and the #1 bestselling novel of 2018, was praised as "ambitious and wildly readable" (New York Times Book Review) and "a fabulously entertaining thriller" (Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Chernow).

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Well, this book isn’t the most subtle of creations that was for sure. It was also a book that I didn’t actually read the blurb for once and instead just went and got it after reading a review and generally enjoying the recent ‘Run Rose Run’ cowrote with Dolly Parton and after reading a review with it, thought why not let’s give a go.

Is it as good as Run Rose Run? Bit of a hard one to decide on here if I am honest as the full tone of the two books is completely different as both books were full of short, sharp chapters both of which moved at a fairly brisk pace and that was were the differences end.

This book focuses on a ex President Matthew Keating who made a fateful mistake and caused a serious mistake that was felt throughout the world and resulted in his own vice-president challenging for re-election and Keating and his family were all sent packing from the White House.

Some time later, his daughter is kidnapped and well that is where really get interesting certainly by the halfway stage and it then went off in a direction I wasn’t expecting personally and certainly wouldn’t be discussing in the context of this review.

Realistic it certainly by the second half of the book it wasn’t and subtle it wasn’t either by any stretch of thought but it was great fun even though it was completely over the top the further I got into the book.

The use of the short chapters works really well and allows for all of the large backing cast to each have their own moment in the sun or fronting their own chapter. The danger is with books like this is some books you can really end up struggling to keep ontop off it with so many characters, but it didn’t really seem to impact the book here I think because off the pacing.

Apart from like I said a guilty pleasure, there isn’t a lot of faults in this book. The first half of the book is perhaps like James Patterson and Bill Clinton writing a episode of the West Wing, the second half err… feels like Rambo III.

It’s a lot better than it sounds and I did really enjoy it. As good as Run Rose Run…. Not really but it was great fun and I do recommend it.

New Spoken Label Session - Skylar J Wynter and Neshka Turner

Recorded live at Stockport's The Petersgate Tap on Wednesday 05 October, this special live Spoken Label (Poet / Artist Podcast) features the wonderful poet Skylar J Wynter and the equally wonderful artist, Neshka Turner talking about their joint book 'Shine' and also their UK and Europe tour 'Decent Beings' which is ongoing as we speak.

Shine, their joint book is described as "In the wake of global pandemic, COVID-19, best-selling author, Skylar J Wynter and artist, Neshka Turner, bring us a captivating collaboration of art and poetry exploring humanity's quest for transformation from adversity.

Turner's artwork, an unafraid combination of pieces morphing between stark to rich with symbology, provide the perfect textured landscape for Wynter's unapologetic exploration of modern-day challenges we face as individuals and collectives in a bid to be seen, heard, and accepted just as we are.

SHINE, embodying the work of two women from very different cultural backgrounds and lived experiences, navigating their way towards love of self, is a visual and poetic invitation to all to embrace the abrasiveness of life. The unflinching images captured between its covers will crack you open, let in the light, and set your mind free with a humble truth: we don't know what we don't know,
so the only way forward is with decency towards self and others."

Book Review - Amy Liptrot - The Instant

Amy Liptrot – The Instant

Blurb:

Wishing to leave the quiet isolation of her Orkney island life, Amy Liptrot books a one-way flight to Berlin. Searching for new experiences, inspiration and love, she rents a loftbed in a shared flat and looks for work. She explores the streets, nightclubs and parks and seeks out the city's wildlife - goshawks, raccoons and hooded crows. She looks for love through the screen of her laptop.

Over the course of a year Amy makes space for something to happen, hoping for the unexpected. And it comes with an erotic jolt, in the form of a love affair that obsesses her.

The Instant is a frank and luscious look at the addictive power of love and lust. It is also an exploration of the cycles of the moon, the flight paths of migratory birds, the mesmerising power of Neolithic stonework and the trails followed behind by a generation who exist online.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

* Book to be reviewed in audio form for October 2022’s Reading in Bed (Book Review Podcast).

Upon recommendation from a friend I read Amy Liptrot’s debut novel ‘The Outrun’ and was left spellbound about Liptrot’s journey to sobriety and home to Orkney where she reconnects with the natural world, finding peace and meaning.

The Instant is its sequel taking the reader into what happens next with her journey. Most of the book is set in Berlin which I did find surprising as I was expecting if I am honest more about her life in the Orkney recovering from the madness of her life in London, but instead seeking new experiences in another major city.

My knowledge of Berlin I have to state is a lot less than London although I have being there once more years ago than I care to admit so I found this quite hard to compare upon personal experiences unlike London and therefore found it harder book to relate and although the book is as vivid as the Outrun with the sections such as the section about butterflies, the book with her sex scenes were a bit too close to the knuckle if I am honest.

Like the best bits of the Outrun, the essay style of this book is at its best writing about the moon, raccoons, being a modem nomad on the internet and her uneasy relationship with technology were striking moments and like stated elsewhere were excellent sections and in some ways would have made this a worthy sequel.

Even if the book is flawed, and this is far from a perfect book, The Instant is a strong book showing the next step of recovery isn’t always sweetness and light, and for every step forwards, there is always every chance you could fall backwards and the Author’s relationship she falls into only for it to fall apart left me feeling uncomfortable in places.

And perhaps that was the point behind the book in this short book (180 pages or so which I think made the wise move of not hanging around).

New Spoken Label Session - Peter Humphreys

Latest episode from Spoken Label (Author / Artist / Spoken Word) Podcast features Peter Humphreys, author off "Hong Kong Rocks" and Podcast host off "First Impressions".

Hong Kong Rocks is described as "Nick Powell, arriving in Hong Kong with his soon-to-be-ex-wife Lennox, finds himself drawn into the political machinations affecting the city as the Occupy movement takes root. A fatal accident exposes the factions vying for control of the SAR and gives Nick the second chance desired by many Hong Kong expats, but will he make the most of the opportunity, or find himself on the wrong side of history? Shifting between a variety of unique voices, HONG KONG ROCKS (a Proverse Prize 2018 finalist) is part thriller, part meditation on the challenges facing a special autonomous region punching above its weight.

"'Hong Kong Rocks' is a story set in an alternative present; it is in part a whodunit, with the who and the it constantly in doubt. At the centre is a group of dissolute, middle-aged, expatriates, who are held more or less upright, or let fall by surer, stronger women. Dissolution, however, has its consequences, in conflict with either the newly introduced Deportation Act, or two cross-border goons, or both. And, as the tale reaches its finale, we cannot but agree with the narrator that Hong Kong is 'hotting up'."—Philip Chatting, author of "The Snow Bridge and Other Stories", Winner of the Proverse Prize 2014.

"Funny and twisted, in Humphreys’ spirited novel Nick and a garrulous band of expats are caught in the shifting societal landscape of Hong Kong. Nights drinking at the Brolly, missing friends, the Occupy movement, fear of deportation and the threat of discovery by Chinese agents, all loom large. As his freedom hangs on the edge of a precipice, Nick seizes on the absurdities, secrets and joys of a life lived with regret."—Maria Roberts, author of "Single Mother on the Verge", Penguin."

His Podcast 'First Impressions' can be found on all of the usual places.

Book Review: The Christmas Match – Football in No Man’s Land 1914 – Pehr Thermaenius

Blurb:

After four months of intense fighting, the war in Flanders between German and British soldiers fell silent on Christmas Eve 1914. The soldiers started singing instead of shooting. On Christmas Day they came out of their trenches and met in No Man’s Land. Some chased rabbits. Some played football. This true story is about two footballers and soldiers, one Saxon and one Scot, who were in units that played a match in a field between the French villages Houplines and Frelinghien.

Scotsman Jimmy Coyle had played professional football before the war. Saxon Albert Schmidt played in the third team for his local club. On Christmas afternoon they each got the chance to defeat their opponents without weapons. Pehr Thermaenius has tracked both Jimmy’s and Albert’s stories through military archives; from mobilization in August to the hard frozen mud in that field in Flanders that became a football field on Christmas Day. The story of the football match is a light in the darkness as the world remembers the tragic waste of a hundred years ago.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

A few of you know I have being working on a series of anti war books with my friend, fellow poet and artist Nick Armbrister since 2013 which we called Europa and through that and I have learnt a lot about various individual stories in the Second World War, most of which terrible and heartbreaking.

The First World War however apart from one brief poem in Europa in 2014 is a part of history I have yet to really delve into with my work in Europa (but I will). The one poem covered the above topic, the Christmas Match in 2014 and has proved a topic of interest ever since to me.

This book it has to be said I discovered by accident recently picking it up at a second hand bookshop and thought hmmm.. this could be a interesting read, and well it was interesting.

It was clear from the beginning that this book was a labour of love by the writer who is a Swedish journalist. Apparently he worked for many years for Dagens Industri (a Swedish financial, daily newspaper) and has long been interested in the First World War.

In this book you can see the attempt by the writer to tell the story over a Scottish and a Saxon Soldier who may well have played in this match but while told whole hearteningly, I was left a little distant in this book by the way these two characters were built up which were left very two dimensional instead of fully formed and took me a lot out of the whole narrative.

Originally published in Sweden, whether this was a language barrier or the style of the writing is a bit trickier not really engaging me throughout the book. Thankfully, either way, the book is mercifully brief in a fairly large format totalling in just over 200 pages and proved easy enough to read through in a few days but it is little more than an introduction than what felt to be a decent, full sized study of an incredible moment in likely one of the most cruel wars in modern history.

8/10 – The historial element of the book.

6/10 – The actual telling of the book.
