Writers Influences 21: Jeffrey Gonell on George Lucas

Today’s feature from Jeffrey Gonell focues on the film-maker George Lucas.

Like a lot of people from my generation and again more recently would know George Lucas from his creation of the Star Wars saga in 1977 and in my eyes, the even better the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and as of counting eight sequels films that have followed re-inventing Science Fiction ever since.

In relation to George Lucas, Jeffrey admits “I have a very big role model when it comes to writing, and that is George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars. He created an amazing fantasy story world filled with likable characters, action-based plots, and deep thematic meaning. “ before pausing and carrying straight on with “I always loved the whole concept of “the force”, and how its cosmic energy is alive in all living things.”

It is a phenomenal story in which warriors who use this cosmic energy for good, the Jedi, or at war with those who use it for evil, the Sith.” He reflects next which I completely agree with him over remembering seeing my sister cry her eyes out over the fate of Han Solo in the Empire Strikes back “The idea of a galactic empire also inspired a lot of ideas and passions for my story world. I took the whole concept of a galactic authority and turned it into a benevolent inter-planetary institution, similar to the Republic, which is what predated the galactic empire.”

I also employ the use of cosmic energy for combat, but in a way that resembles the action scenes of Dragon Ball Z.” He carries on describing his own work drawing a comparsion with the more recent Dragon Ball Z “Lots of high powered kicks and punches, along with energy strikes being blasted from fists.”

Deep space warfare is a must in my writing, and Star Wars definitely is one of the top franchises in starship battles.” He talks about next which I completely agree with “The many different starships and fighters and weapons in the Star Wars franchise definitely served as a big influence in the Destroying Decrot series.”

But more than anything, Star Wars gives us a deep connection with the characters. The whole “No, Luke. I am your father,” business will always go down as one of the most dramatic scenes in all of cinema.” He discusses next in Star Wars which without doubt is such a powerful, emoitional scene “In Volume One: The Monolith, there is an emotional scene similar to this one, and it is when Grewks, one of the main characters, conquers his inner conflict with the help of a celestial goddess. It is only then that he is able to conquer the outer conflict, the fight against the Emperor Usharo Viuna.”

I really look up to George Lucus, he is the king of Space Opera.” He concludes with “I hope that the Destroying Decrot series will one day be considered a top franchise in the space opera sub-genre of sci-fi like his franchise is. When people think of Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon Five, Andromeda, and Dragon Ball Z, I want them to think of DESTROYING DECROT as well.”
